Times are tense near a popular beach that was recently subjected to a disastrous oil spill. Signs warn the public about dangers due to contamination abound, but one would not expect to find this on the beach.
Closer inspection yields a horrific, yet bewildering sight. A small shark appears to be riding a skateboard within a jar labelled “shark”. In black marker someone has also scrawled “Balto”. Where did this object come from? The sea? Was it placed here as an an environmental statement? Is it art? This freakish shark in a jar originates from a Baltimore gift shop that received resistance from animal rights activists. After sales were down, he store was forced to remove this item this item from the shelves.
Now a year later, and much further north in Canada, we see it reappear. It has obviously been altered as the original artifact shows the shark housed in a blue fluid. Now he rides a skateboard in that same jar and rides alone as there is no sign or clue as to who put him at the beach and why? One can connect this to an animal rights statement, environmental themes, or publicity stunt for the inquisitive. Whatever the intention, it is intriguing.
